The question of Identity runs deep in my work.
Who Am I ? series of works stem from a personal quest of finding the essence of my Identity. Being born in one continent, raised in another, born to one set of parents, raised by others caused much confusion along with a questioning of identity.
Where are my roots? And Who Am I?
My parents’ roots had too been lost due to Partition – And so this internal emotional unrest, quest to find a satisfying answer to the existential question began and I have explored it through my art and continue to do so.
Here in these works I am portraying the different masks we wear to fit into the different roles we undertake as parents, spouses, preachers, teachers, friends, lovers etc. Each role has a different mask, each role is a valid part of us, part of our greater whole, as all the parts or facets of ourself create our whole being. Fragmented, tormented, bandaged, broken, somehow whole.
I soon came to realise it is a question which we all ask, at some point in our lives.
So Who Are We Really??
